Champion of Environmental Education
UVM Graduate Alejandra Contreras has been making waves in environmental conservation and youth leadership for the past ten years. This is a story about her journey from a dedicated law student to a prominent environmental advocate.
Alejandra's story begins with her early involvement in community service and sustainable development. As a high school student, she founded Somos Más Decididos (We Are More Determined), a nonprofit organization in Mexico’s state of Veracruz. This organization has been at the forefront of promoting innovative and collective projects aimed at environmental conservation. For over 15 years, Alejandra has driven numerous initiatives, empowered communities, and fostered a deep connection with nature – efforts that underscore her passion for creating a sustainable future for Mexico.
One of Alejandra’s most impactful projects is Connected by Nature, Somos Más Decididos program that empowers children and young students to become agents of change by adopting sustainable lifestyles. Recognizing the lack of direct interaction with nature in many children’s lives, Alejandra and her team provide first-hand experiences with biodiversity conservation. Through visits and excursions, participants explore the environmental services of reefs and wetlands, engage in beach cleanups, and participate in mangrove reforestation. These activities, integrated into school curriculums, enhance the students’ understanding of Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, and Natural Sciences.
Alejandra’s work has not gone unnoticed. She has been a speaker at numerous national and international forums, including events organized by the Inter-American Development Bank and the United Nations. Her efforts have earned her recognition and accolades to honor her work, such as UVM’s Award for Social Development, the Greenovators Award from the Inter-American Development Bank, and the National Youth Award from the Mexican Institute of Youth (Instituto Mexicano de la Juventud).
Reflecting on her journey, Alejandra says, “I realized that from caring for the environment and environmental education, I had an opportunity to generate a greater change in consciousness and, above all, to facilitate habits and attitudes that could guide a generation of sustainable lifestyles.”
Alejandra’s connection to UVM has been integral to her growth and success. UVM’s emphasis on social responsibility and community impact has significantly shaped Alejandra’s approach to her work. UVM recognized her potential early on, awarding her the UVM Award for Social Development and the Golden Lynx Award for her outstanding contributions.
Alejandra’s dedication to her cause is evident in her unwavering commitment to inspire and educate the younger generation on the importance of proactive involvement in creating a sustainable future. “We young people must take advantage of the opportunity, the tools, and the knowledge we have, because this will lead us to understand how we can generate change,” she said.
Alejandra’s impact extends beyond the borders of Veracruz. Her vision for Somos Más Decididos includes expanding its reach across Mexico and inspiring more young people to take up the mantle of environmental stewardship. Her work exemplifies the power of education and community engagement in driving meaningful change.
In her own words, Alejandra reminds us, “Take action in your life. Don’t wait for things to happen—make them happen. Create your own future and your own hope. Regardless of your beliefs, strive to bring positivity and change to the world.”
Alejandra’s journey is a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on their community and the environment. Her work continues to inspire and pave the way for a more sustainable and conscious world.
