As part of its mission to contribute to a better society, Universidad Tecnológica de México (UNITEC) has launched a YouthActionNet® program, the Premio UNITEC Innovación Tecnológica para el Desarrollo Social (UNITEC Award for Social Development through Technological Innovation) to support the work of young social entrepreneurs. They hosted an award ceremony to recognize the first recipients of the award at their Cuitláhuac campus. UNITEC is the 10th Laureate network institution to open a YouthActionNet® program.
YouthActionNet® is a program created by the International Youth Foundation to support and promote young social entrepreneurs who are looking for innovative solutions to problems and challenges facing communities around the world. This new award recognizes the efforts of young social entrepreneurs while sharing their projects to inspire young people across Mexico to apply their knowledge and give back to their communities.
First place was awarded to the Pluvia project, an initiative of a group of architects led by Omar Enrique Leyva Coca which seeks to capture rainwater in Mexico City to generate energy and produce crops at home, so that scarce fresh water can be used for cooking and sanitation.
Anudarte, led by Fausto Javier Oropeza Enriquez, was one of two second place winners, along with Ionizer, led by Stefania Cardenas Perez. Anudarte is transforming traditional weaving through technical innovations to provide employment opportunities for older people with visual impairments or disabilities. Ionizer is developing a device that reduces emissions by creating gasoline combustion engines with better fuel efficiency.
Manuel Campuzano, UNITEC’s institutional rector; Jorge Vázquez Solache, rector of UNITEC’s Cuitláhuac campus; Dieter Holtz, chief executive officer of Laureate Mexico; William Reese, president of International Youth Foundation; Steven Gray, director of social responsibility for Laureate International Universities; and Miguel Romo, outreach director at UNITEC, delivered the new awards. During the awards ceremony, UNITEC was recognized for creating a network of young entrepreneurs, whose work can be replicated in other communities around the world.
