In the Leticia Ma auditorium of UNITEC’s Teguicagalpa campus, the winners of the Trigo Foundation’s Smart Company Competition (La Fábrica Smart), were recognized. The competition was created to promote innovation and the creation of new mobile applications that can improve Honduran society. The winning team was composed of students Dina Ventura, Pat Rodríguez and David Bustillo. Their project connects volunteers with non-governmental organizations and promotes opportunities for those groups to promote their work.
Judges cited the fact that their app was innovative, will have a positive social impact through supporting the country’s leading non-profit organizations and for the user-friendly design. The winning team was awarded $6,000 USD and received three MacBook Pro laptops. The students will have the opportunity to participate in the development of the app in 2015 with financing from the foundation.
The competition included student teams from different universities from throughout the country. Two of the other leading ideas that were created during the competition were for apps that focus on promoting the history and culture of Honduras and others that focused on education.
