UNITEC Celebrates the Inauguration of its Newest Campus with the Vice-President of Honduras

Universidad Tecnológica Centroamericana (UNITEC) is proud to announce it has opened the most modern university campus in Honduras in San Pedro Sula. The new campus meets the highest international standards for university design and includes extensive academic and administrative areas, classrooms and laboratories, a complete resource center for learning and research, a gymnasium, outside tennis courts, soccer fields, swimming pools, and a recreation center that includes music rooms, video games, reading areas, a lounge and cafe, a modern and functional auditorium that can seat 420 people, first aid center and parking for 650 vehicles. The new campus will serve more than 7,500 students.

The new campus is part of the country’s first and only intelligent city, Altia Business Park, which includes the Altara mall, a Marriott Courtyard hotel with 121 rooms, a medical center supported by the largest U.S. hospitals, residential apartments, soccer fields and corporate offices that house the local headquarters of several multinational companies.

"A college campus of this level is an important contribution to the growth of the infrastructure of San Pedro Sula and the economic development of the northern part of the country, the most important industrial center of Honduras, in addition to encouraging those who want to continue their studies at a leading institution," said UNITEC’s rector Luis Zelaya Orlando at the opening ceremony.

Zelaya added, "This project reflects the confidence in Honduras and in higher education in the country from UNITEC and Laureate International Universities, the largest network of private universities in the world, which we joined in 2005 and which supports this institution and our mission to provide quality higher education."

During his speech at the ceremony, the president of the board of Grupo Karims, Yusuf Amdani, thanked UNITEC and Laureate International Universities for choosing to place this magnificent campus in the Altia Business Park, the largest and most important business complex in Honduras and a potential job site for students and alumni. He added that this alliance will strengthen the relationship between academia and industry in the northern part of the country.

"Because of its location within the smart city of Altia, the new UNITEC campus in San Pedro Sula benefits from the fastest growing and most productive sectors in Honduras. The academic offerings of the institution will lead to enhanced opportunities for the training of professionals with the skills required in today's global society," said the vice-chancellor of the North Zone, Ana Laffite.

Laffite added, "UNITEC believes that quality education is nurtured by good teachers, a strong and cutting-edge academic model, internationality, technology, but also a modern and adequate infrastructure to achieve excellence in the teaching-learning process, so having a first level university in UNITEC benefits the country in terms of coverage, quality and relevance of university education."
