Dr. Martín Montecino Elected President of the Superior Council of Science of the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development

Dr. Martín Montecino, Director of the Center for Biomedical Research at Universidad Andrés Bello (UNAB) in Chile, has been elected president of the Superior Council of Science of the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FONDECYT). The main function of this organization is to assign public resources for the development of basic sciences and specific research programs.

The Superior Council of Science is an autonomous organization linked to the Government of Chile through the National Commission of Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT). The council consists of highly qualified scientists recognized for their contributions to scientific research. Dr. Montecino has been a member of the Superior Council of Science since 2015, serving as advisor to the Biology and Sociology Study Groups. 

Dr. Montecino earned his degree in biochemistry from Universidad de Concepción in 1989 and obtained a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Massachusetts in 1996. He joined UNAB in 2010 as Director of the Center for Biomedical Research. From 2005-06, he served as president of the Chilean Society of Cellular Biology. He has authored or coauthored over 140 peer-reviewed papers and 21 chapter books. Furthermore, he has directed over 20 doctoral dissertations, 9 postdoctoral fellowships, and numerous postgraduate applications.

He is a member of the editorial council of several scientific publications, including Biological Research, Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, and Eukaryotic Reviews in Gene Expression. His research has focused on cellular and molecular biology, particularly on the mechanisms that regulate the expression of genes during cellular differentiation.
