During a special ceremony in December, rector José Rodríguez Pérez and other leaders from Universidad Andrés Bello (UNAB) recognized the university’s top student athletes. The ceremony was organized by the Division of Student Services (DAE) and honored student athletes that experienced success at the national and international level.
Matías Aguilera Corvalán, a student in the physical education program and captain of the university’s soccer team, and Claudio Lavín Lozier, a coach for the basketball team, were recognized with the 2015 UNAB Sports Award. Other distinctions for success in sports at the international level included Jiménez (track and field), Marco and Esteban Grimalt (beach volleyball), María Fernanda Valdés (weightlifting), Ignacio Morales (taekwondo), Valentina Salazar (javelin), Siri Barnett (taekwondo) and César Jofré (decathlon).
One of the more emotional moments of the ceremony was a special tribute to Diego Manzo, a physical education student, who organized free workshops for young people that are, like him, deaf. Thomas Heyl, a student in one of UNAB’s diploma programs, was also recognized for earning a gold medal in tennis in the Special Olympics.
Rector Rodríguez and José Luis León Márquez, general director student services, congratulated the assembled students for their hard work, both on the field and in the classroom, and called on them to continue to focus their efforts to reach their academic and athletic goals.
