Universidad Andrés Bello students win university debate championship

On July 30, a debate team from Universidad Andrés Bello, composed of students Nicole Hansen and Ricardo Gomez, won the III World University Debating Championship. The event was hosted at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain.

UNAB sent two teams that were composed of Pedro Herrera and Gabriela Munoz (both from UNAB’s law degree program) and Ricardo Gomez Caro and Nicole Hansen (from UNAB’s Law and Audiology programs, respectively).

According to Nicole, "We are happy we did this well. The debate society at UNAB has existed for over 10 years and its focus has always been the teaching of critical thinking tools and their proper use in society. This win is the just reward for the hard work of many people who have devoted their efforts to make this opportunity available to UNAB’s students. My participation in this group is the result of rigorous work done of the teachers who inspired me to do the same for other students."

In the tournament, the UNAB teams faced more than 60 teams from Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Guatemala, United States, Mexico and Spain. They were the only team from Chile to make it to the finals. They were selected as the winner based on the unanimous vote of a panel composed of 9 judges from different countries. In addition, Ricardo and Nicole won individual awards, taking 3rd and 4th place overall, and Ricardo was also honored as a finalist for the Sole Speech Tournament, a competition held in parallel to the main tournament.
