The director of Instituto Profesional AIEP’s school of design and architecture, Hernán Garfías, was recognized with the 2014 Design Award of Excellence by the Chilean National Council of Culture and Art.
“It is a recognition for the work I have done throughout my career to create a public space for design, art and architecture, which are fundamentally necessary for the continued development of Chile and its people,” said Garfías.
“Hernan Garfias has played a fundamental role in the development of design in Chile, not just as a creator and educator, but also as an entrepreneur and innovator. No one deserves this recognition more than he,” said Culture Minister Claudia Barattini, adding that it was, “clear that the history of contemporary design in Chile would be unimaginable without his contributions.”
Prior to leading the school of design and architecture at AIEP, Hernán Garfías founded the design agency Ag&P Associates in 1990 and the magazine Diseño in 1989, which had circulation throughout Latin America. Garfías was also responsible for creating the faculty of architecture, art and design at Universidad Diego Portales and has delivered a number of workshops and talks on the design both inside and outside of Chile.
