UNIFACS celebrates 40th Anniversary

Universidade Salvador (UNIFACS)

40 years of student focused and innovative programs have made UNIFACS a leader in Brazilian higher education

Founded with the vision of preparing students for future professional success, UNIFACS is proud to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2012. Today, UNIFACS offers 42 undergraduate degree programs, nine distance learning programs, and a variety of graduate degree programs (including, specializations, MBAs, master and doctoral programs) to thousands of students in seven campuses in Salvador. Throughout its four decades, the institution has trained thousands of professionals and has been the source of hundreds of innovative research projects that have contributed to the development of the region and the country.

According to the Ministry of Education (MEC), UNIFACS is the best private university in Bahia and second best in the North / Northeast. The ranking takes into account factors such as the scores in the National Student Performance (Enade), qualification of faculty, facilities and infrastructure, teaching resources, commitment to post-graduate programs of study, number of teachers with master and doctoral degrees, among other parameters.

For the Rector of UNIFACS, Marcia Barros, the institution's success story is about the continued pursuit of quality education and the ability to identify new societal trends and creating the programs needed to support those trends. The university was one of the pioneers in the creation of courses in Data Processing in 1980 and was the first to open a course in the field of Fashion in 1999. UNIFACS also innovated by taking a leadership position in offering higher education distance courses in Bahia.

According to Rector Barros, "The commemoration of 40 years of UNIFACS is full of achievements, but is primarily based on recognition from the community about our contributions to the development of the state and region, by offering an education focused on excellence that has contributed to the development of thousands of professionals working in various areas of knowledge. This track record motivates us to complete another 40 years because, although we have already reached maturity as a university, we are constantly renewing and brining a spirit of innovation to our students."

The integration of UNIFACS into Laureate International Universities, which took place in 2010, brought a new perspective on the internationalization of education offered by UNIFACS, extending the global possibilities of academic learning and cultural experiences for students. The president of UNIFACS, Marcelo Henrik, highlights the journey of the institution and the opportunities that arise from joining Laureate. "UNIFACS always held the belief that it could go further. We achieved levels of excellence in our courses and programs, university status and very high quality levels. Since joining Laureate, we have begun to go even further. This is a fertile field for an institution that believes it can always go further," said Henrik.

"The university is stronger every day and this force is the fuel we need to move on. We see in the future an even greater university, with more quality and participation in the development of Bahia," says the president of UNIFACS.

Manoel Joaquim Fernandes de Barros Sobrinho, Chancellor and founder of UNIFACS, recalled that when UNIFACS was created they were focused on offering management courses to meet the needs of the private sector and the economic development Bahia. "In our view, the existing courses did not fully meet the demands, which ultimately led us to change the industrial landscape of the state."

From the beginning, the visionary spirit was a mark of UNIFACS, which emerged as the School of Business Administration of Bahia (EAEB) in 1972. The institution introduced a modern model of professional education to Bahia, which was designed to serve the needs of the new economic landscape of Bahia, which has since grown into the industrial center of the region.
