Brings students and health sciences leaders to address important topic
On April 12th, Universidade Potiguar (UnP) hosted the First Forum on Organ and Tissue Donation, in partnership with the Transplant Center of Rio Grande do Norte. The event was attended by more than 500 students from UnP’s School of Health Sciences who participated in lectures and discussions on the challenges of promoting organ and tissue donation. The event was also attended by representatives of leading organizations like the Transplant Association of Rio Grande do Norte and the Instituto do Bem, an organization promoting research on transplants to improve the quality of life of patients.
"Organ and tissue donation is a pressing current issue and is accompanied by many questions and controversies. As UnP is a leading center for health sciences training, we need to be a part of this discussion and bring it right to our students at the University. We're doing a month of communications around this event to educate the UnP and local communities about the importance of organ donation and the fact that making a donation can save a life." explained Professor Giselle Gasparino, director of UnP’s School of Health Sciences.
The collaboration between UnP and the municipal government is of fundamental importance to achieve solutions to the problems faced by patients and medical teams in the country. This applies to the State Health Department, which has the opportunity to use UnP hospital simulators to train staff who work directly with transplants.
For Dr. Rodrigo Vilar Furtado, coordinator of Rio Grande do Norte’s transplant center, the state’s poor infrastructure has made the partnership with UnP vital in ensuring their professionals are properly trained. "This partnership facilitates our planning. For example, we could never organize the courses and seminars that we are doing if we did not have these partners. This is a partnership of life, "said Furtado. Today, Rio Grande do Norte is the 3rd largest provider of organs for donation in Brazil.
At the same time as the Forum on Organ and Tissue Donation at UnP, the School of Health Sciences conducted a course on Organ and Tissue Donation on April 12 and 13, which included theoretical and practical classes on the medical and legal procedures related to the field. Throughout the day professionals attended courses taught by professors from some of the largest health institutions in the country.
According to Dr. Reginald Boni, coordinator of Organ and Tissue Donation services for Santa Casa de São Paulo and Botucatu and representative of Donor's Life, "UnP’s simulation center is fantastic; it works well and meets all requirements necessary for training. UnP is to be congratulated, "said Boni.
