In 2013, Laureate’s founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Douglas Becker created the William C. Dennis Scholarship for International Studies to honor the pivotal role Mr. Dennis played in the growth and success of the Laureate International Universities network. Mr. Dennis joined Laureate in October 2001 and served as president of Laureate's Latin America operations and led the rapid growth and successful expansion of the Laureate network into Mexico, Chile, Brazil and other countries throughout Central and South America. By 2013, when he left the company, the region included more than 620,000 students enrolled in and completing undergraduate and graduate degrees at the more than 30 institutions.
The scholarship program provides three full scholarships for undergraduate students enrolled in institutions in Laureate Latin America. Each institution in the region was eligible to nominate one student, who were each selected through a competitive application process at their home institution and evaluated by the scholarship program’s selection committee. The committee includes Ricardo Berckemeyer, CEO of Laureate Latin America; Dieter Holtz, CEO of Laureate Mexico; Juan Jose Hurtado, CEO of Laureate Central America; Jesus Villate, CEO of Laureate’s Andean Region; and Jose Roberto Loureiro, CEO of Laureate Brazil.
A total of 19 institutions nominated a student for the scholarship in this, its inaugural year, who each prepared an application packet that included a personal statement, letters of recommendation and a brief video. The selection committee thoroughly reviewed all the applications and selected the three 2014 Dennis Scholars:
Maria Ximena Barahona Mata from Universidad Latina de Costa Rica. Maria studies law and will be studying at Universidad Europea de Madrid.
Miguel Malle from Universidad Viña del Mar in Chile is a fourth year architecture student and will be pursuing his studies at NewSchool of Architecture and Design.
Carolina Bonfada from UniRitter in Brazil is a fourth year architecture student and will be pursuing her studies at NewSchool of Architecture and Design.
