Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, was the keynote speaker at this year’s Campus Symposium held September 3 and 4 at BiTS (Business and Information Technology School) in Iserlohn, Germany. Past keynote speakers at the annual event have included President Bill Clinton, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Chancellor Gerhard Schröder of Germany and President Lech Walesa of Poland.
With the theme of “Green Business,” this year’s Campus Symposium focused on how Germany, Europe and the rest of the world are finding ways to combine economy and ecology due to environmental changes and economic realities. “Ecology and economy have been mutually exclusive but they can reasonably complement each other. The connection of these two fields of action, called Green Business, will become the great opportunity and the great challenge for the 21st century,” said Matthias Thelen, a BiTS alumnus who led the organization of this year’s Campus Symposium.
Mr. Blair was the final speaker on the second day of the symposium, September 4. Other prominent speakers included Sigmar Gabriel, federal minister of the environment; Reinhard Clemens, board member of Deutsche Telekom and CEO of T-Systems; Detlef Spigiel, board member of Grohe AG; Prof. Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, co-founder of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy and author of the bestseller “Faktor Vier”; and Prof. Dr. Peter Höppe, head of Geo Risk Research/ Corporate Climate Center of the Munich Re Group.
The Campus Symposium, developed by BiTS students and started in 2005, attracts renowned speakers from the international worlds of politics, science and business, and provides a framework for current and future decision-makers to benefit from their experience and knowledge.
BiTS, the first university in Germany to focus on green business and entrepreneurship, has established a new program called Green Business Management making it a leader in Germany in this field.
