On Thursday, February 3, 2011, the Young Social Entrepreneur Awards @ Bilgi celebrated its first annual awards ceremony at the Pera Museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Established as a collaborative effort of the Sylvan/Laureate Foundation, Istanbul Bilgi University, TEGV Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey, and the International Youth Foundation, the Youth Social Entrepreneur Awards @ Bilgi seeks to identify, recognize, and support accomplished social entrepreneurs, ages 18 - 29, throughout Turkey.
More than 150 individuals gathered to honor the 10 young Turkish youth selected for their leadership in social change initiatives. Prior to the awards ceremony, the 10 awardees participated in a week-long training on topics relevant to their work, such as leadership, communication, and fundraising. According to Istem Duygu Akalp, the Young Social Entrepreneurs Award @ Bilgi program helped her connect with peers and become more aware of resources available to social entrepreneurs in Turkey. Istem Akalp is the co-founder of "I Am the Leader of My Life," Turkey’s first youth-led, peer coaching project. The project introduces Turkish adolescents, ages 15 to 24, to personal growth and leadership, enabling them to define success and happiness for themselves.
