Brothers Luis and Vicente Gil, students in Universidad Europea’s Aerospace Engineering program, have won the First Edition of Innovaciencia.
This competition of ideas and projects, organized by the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) with the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), was created to stimulate know how and innovative and entrepreneurial talent in young people. There were 56 projects submitted for consideration in the competition, representing virtually all scientific and technical areas.
Universidad Europea students were recognized for their project Power Satellite Simulator, a software system that can be used to manage power of low-orbit satellites and to assess their viability after launch. Luis and Vicente have not yet reviewed the option of commercializing the software, although its application in universities is perfectly possible.
The call for Innovaciencia II Contest is now open and the deadline for submitting new projects concludes on April 25, 2014. For winners, the competition provides a cash prize (€2,500 for the first prize, €2,000 for the second, and €1,500 for third), an iPad and counseling sessions to help guide winners into a scientific or professional career, directed by CSIC researchers.
