Dr. Maite Villalba is the first computer engineer to have her doctoral work recognized with this honor
Dr. Maite Villalba, PhD, from the Department of Information Systems at Universidad Europea de Madrid, was awarded the IT Security Trophy for her research in the field of Information Security. This award is organized and awarded each year by the journal Network Security. This new industry recognition, awarded for applied research in Software Engineering Security in Information Technology, is especially noteworthy because it is the first time the awards has recognized doctoral research. The research project was selected from among 70 nominations by a jury of experts brought together by Network Security.
Professor Villalba presented research based on a new model that measures the quality of computer security programs that protect against possible threats, like anti-virus programs or firewalls. The model has benefitted from the advice of more than 200 professionals, has been reviewed by more than 100 companies and has been applied in the evaluation of products from different vendors, including Microsoft (ISA firewalls and IAG), SonicWall (NSA 4500), and Realsec (Criptosec 2048).
The evaluation reports of the project were published in the journal e.Security and the results from the study were disseminated through the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade. The many references from the work at conferences, influential research journals, a chapter in a book published by Springer-Verlag (Factors with negative influence on software testing practice in Spain: a survey), a book recently published by LAP LAMBERT Academic SEA Publishing GmbH & Co. KG (Software Quality Models), and the special prize for the best doctoral thesis in the area of knowledge in 2009, are other recognitions earned by Professor Villalba for her work in this vital field.
