On the occasion of the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures, Universidad Europea de Madrid wanted to recognize the efforts of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, for his dedication and support of projects and initiatives to promote understanding and reconciliation between nations. To this end, Universidad Europea de Madrid awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to his Excellency Mr. D. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey.
In his acceptance speech, the new Doctor Honoris Causa made special emphasis on the various bonds that unite Spain and Turkey, central countries in the Alliance of Civilizations, and the firm belief that “conflict is not good for humanity…. We do not have to construct our future with the memories of the past, but instead should base our acts on the freedom and solidarity to reach the good of all”. Prime Minister Erdoğan also emphasized the important role that the international mass media must fulfill for society: “The generalization and expansion of mass media of masses do not have to serve to foment prejudices, but can be a force to fight against injustice”.
Halil Guvën, Rector of Istanbul Bilgi University delivered the Laudatio, during which he paid tribute to the Prime Minister’s work: “Erdoğan has secured important advances in the fight against corruption and has promoted the democratization and growth of Turkey (…). Erdoğan’s words, `we do not need a cold or a hot war, but a constructive peace', have positioned our country, and himself, as a trusted partner in international relations”.
In the words of Águeda Benito, Rector of Universidad Europea de Madrid, “It is an honor for us to recognize the fighting spirit, bravery, the enterprising capacity, the social commitment and leadership of the person who conceived, started up and, along with our President, drives the Alliance of the Civilizations …. Today, Prime Minister Erdoğan joins our cloister along with many other excellent teachers like Juan Antonio Samaranch, symbol of the Modern Olympics and Ambassador of Spain to the world, whose recent loss we so deeply regret, Enrique V. Iglesias, Mario Vargas Llosa, Pedro Alonso, Luis Bassat, and Nelson Mandela”.
Douglas L. Becker, representing Laureate International Universities, the international university network that UEM belongs to, also wanted to emphasize the figure of Erdoğan as an example of leadership for young people worldwide.
In the framework of the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures, UEM wants to recognize the work of personalities whose role in society and politics has served to bring people closer together through peaceful dialogue. The Turkish Prime Minister, considered by Time magazine to be one of the 100 most influential people in the world and one of the 25 most important international political leaders, has strengthened the relations of the country with other political leaders and has dedicated his efforts to secure Turkey membership in the European Union.
Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM) belongs to the Laureate International Universities network, a leader in international higher education, with close to 600,000 students in 50 institutions and 21 countries. At the moment UEM has more than 12,500 students, in seven academic departments and four graduate centers. UEM’s activity is supported by three fundamental values: international, professional vocation and commitment to the academic quality of the 21st century that have placed UEM among the leaders in the construction of the European Space of Higher Education.
