MDS wins Auckland Animated Awards

The 3D Animation project 'First Contact', created by students from the Media Design School, walked away as the Auckland entries winner at Animated Auckland. Animated Auckland is an evening celebrating Auckland's entries to The Hamburg Animation Award. Since 2008, Auckland has run a competition for the Auckland entries to the international event, as part of its strategic alliance with Hamburg.

The Hamburg Animation Award - The annual international Competition for animation students, and recent graduates, is a unique opportunity for Auckland's young, up and coming animators to share their work with an international audience.

This year there were 16 Auckland entries to the Hamburg Animation Awards. Entries were received from AUT University, Freelance Animation School, Lifeway College and Media Design School.

'First Contact' was awarded the Best Auckland Animation for its technical style and received a workshop with an animator from Nickelodeon courtesy of Oktobor animation.

'Das Tub', an animation by another Media Design School student group, received special mention for their Nomination for the Audience Award at the Hamburg awards ceremony. Out of over 140 international entries, the Hamburg jury selected 'Das Tub' as one of ten films to be screened at the Hamburg Award Ceremony and at a special public screening in Hamburg.

This year's industry judging panel comprised of:

  • Brent Chambers, Flux Animation Studio and CDC Auckland Committee
  • Dan Wang, Oktobor Animation
  • Gina Dellabarca, Show Me Shorts Film Festival Trust
  • Michael Brook, Film Auckland
  • Linden Tierney, Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development
