Media Design School Student Short Film

Time for Change, a short film by Media Design School students, has picked up Best Animation at the Talking Pictures Festival – held annually in Evanston, Illinois. The Talking Pictures Festival is produced by Percolator Films, a non-profit media arts organization founded by two independent filmmakers. The festival aims to engage audiences with high caliber independent films that are challenging, intriguing, entertaining and prompt the viewer to think outside the box.

Time for Change, made by Advanced 3D students Junying Xu, Dale Pretorius, Jonathan Hagan, Priyan Jayamaha and Rupert Ashton and directed by 3D course leader James Cunningham – took 12 weeks for the class to create.

The style of the film is driven by a lot of reference and concept art. Stylized images of the street and tower clock were loosely based off a German town called Rothenberg. Most of the clothing details on the characters were hand-painted textures, just like a real model, and the old clock characters were based on marionettes. The student team did most of the animation and modeling in Maya, with texturing done using Mudbox and Photoshop. Rendering was done with Mental Ray, editing using Final Cut Pro and compositing and grading was done in Nuke.
