University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) won the annual Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) International Best Student Chapter Award, for its outstanding chapter activities. ACM, a premier membership organization for computing professionals, brought together the most elite student chapters from some of the world’s most prestigious institutions that included the University of Cambridge, Princeton, Caltech, the University of Illinois, the University of Pennsylvania, and King’s College London.
The excellence awards are given by the ACM USA for outstanding performance and is rated under the 5 following categories: overall activities, website, recruitment program, community service, and school service. As the winner of the award, the UPES chapter will receive $500 (32,500 Rupees), and an excellence award logo that they can display on their website. It is a matter of pride that UPES is the first chapter to receive such an award in India, and is all the more impressive because it is the third major recognition they have earned in the last six months. In December 2014, ACM HQ recognized the chapter for Best Celebration of Hour of Code. In February 2015, the chapter was runner’s up for the Best Student Chapter Award by ACM India.
