Students from Laureate’s Australian higher and vocational education institutions – including Torrens University Australia, the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHS) and THINK Education – received the opportunity of a lifetime to participate in Australia’s inaugural World Business Forum (28-29 May 2014 at The Star in Sydney) including the chance to meet and work alongside global business leaders.
“I was delighted to learn that I had been selected to represent Torrens at the prestigious World Business Forum 2014 in Sydney. This is a great honour, particularly as this is the inaugural WBF Ambassadorship program around the world and provides the chance to meet with some of the world's greatest minds and industry leaders and learn first-hand of their experiences,” said Chris Nicholls, Business Development Manager, Jarrett Services, undertaking a Master of Business Administration at Torrens University Australia.
As Academic Partner of the event, nine students from Torrens University Australia were selected to act as personal assistants to shadow the keynote speakers throughout the two day conference, while forty students from BMIHS were involved in event coordination - including collateral development, delegate registration and ushering - and students from the THINK Education group of colleges played a key role in designing Torrens’ exhibition stand.
Representing Torrens University Australia’s undergraduate and postgraduate Australian student body, the nine student ambassadors – aged from 19 to 53 – included an even mix of Torrens students studying on-campus, online and via hybrid mode, selected through an application and interview process which saw scores of students apply.
The nine selected students were each paired to work alongside the event keynote speakers, including global business leaders: leading authority on competitive strategy, Michael Porter; number one ranked “most influential business thinker in the world” by the Wall Street Journal, Gary Hamel; former Australian Prime Minister, The Hon John Howard; former Director of Marketing of Facebook and founder and CEO of Zuckerberg media, Randi Zuckerberg; CEO Worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi, Kevin Roberts; veteran hostage negotiator and organisational and clinical psychologist, George Koehlrieser; Cirque du Soleil’s former Director of Creation, Lyn Heward; world-renowned business advisor, Ram Charan and Stanford University Professor, Andreas Weigend, who coined the term ‘Social Data Revolution’.
Discussing the initiative, Torrens University Australia Chancellor Michael Mann said, “Real-world experiences that facilitate strong links with industry help to prepare our students for today’s (and tomorrow’s) competitive job market. Laureate International Universities and Torrens University Australia place strong emphasis on initiatives and partnerships that allow our students to learn from industry leaders – World Business Forum Sydney is one such platform.”
“This initiative is in line with Laureate’s philosophy of collaborating with industry, and enriching students’ learning through experiential, cutting-edge opportunities that foster networking and mentorship.”
Alongside student involvement, Torrens University Australia’s World Business Forum Sydney partnership included: exhibiting at the event, which was attended by over 2200 business leaders from top tier industries and companies around Australia and beyond; delegate attendance – with key Laureate representatives from Asia-Pacific and the U.S. in attendance; and a private engagement with honorary guest, former Australian Prime Minister The Hon. John Howard and key industry captains and business partners. Three students from Torrens, Blue Mountains and Think along with senior Laureate management attended the high profile event.
