On Monday May 25th, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, former prime minister of Spain, visited Université Internationale de Casablanca (UIC) in Morocco. During his visit, Mr. Zapatero addressed UIC students regarding education and the vital role it plays in creating peace between nations.
Miguel Carmelo, president of Laureate Europe, and Tarafa Marouane, president of UIC’s academic council accompanied Mr. Zapatero during his visit. In presenting Mr. Zapatero to the UIC community, Mr. Marouane stated: “You are truly a person of the highest order. During your two terms in office you put multiple initiatives into operation that have expanded human rights and gender equality and provided many people with the opportunity to have a better life.”
During the next hour, Mr. Zapatero shared a summary of his work with the audience, stating “Peace is the most beautiful ambition of humanity. Without peace, co-existence is simply not possible.”
In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in March 2004, Zapatero proposed a project named the Alliance of Civilizations, which was the first entity within the United Nations that focused on encouraging dialogue with and among Arab and Muslim countries.
“Ten years following the adoption of the Alliance, 27 countries are benefiting from this ambitious program which promotes integration, peace and non-violence,” Zapatero said, also highlighting the vital role education plays in promoting long term peace.
