Global Days of Service Brings Together Laureate Colleagues in Honduras

Every October, thousands of Laureate faculty and staff take a break from their daily work to serve their local communities during the annual Global Days of Service. This year, UNITEC Honduras and the Laureate Honduras office partnered in a comprehensive service project in the capital city of Tegucigalpa that spanned two weeks and involved over 200 faculty and staff who delivered over 1,100 hours of service.

The service activities focused on the López Arellano Public School. The school, which has over 400 students in grades 1-9, is adjacent to UNITEC’s campus in Tegucigalpa. The objectives of the project included improving the school’s infrastructure, offering training to teachers and administrators, and donating materials and supplies.

The UNITEC and Laureate Honduras teams built benches with recycled wood, repainted sporting facilities, and installed outdoor playground equipment. One of the most popular projects among colleagues was the establishment of a vegetable garden where the students can learn about growing and selling vegetables to raise funds for the school.

“This year we decided to focus on a single location in order to maximize the impact of the Global Days of Service activities,” said Nadina Mazzoni, Director of Social Responsibility, UNITEC Honduras. “Our faculty and staff are committed, and our partnership with the Laureate Honduras office has been enriching and very productive.”

At a national level, nearly 500 UNITEC and CEUTEC volunteers contributed over 3,000 service hours.

The Laureate volunteer team also helped establish and furnish a new library and created beautiful indoor and outdoor murals with positive messages and imagery. This collaboration between UNITEC and the Laureate Honduras office is one of many examples of the positive impact that the Laureate network has in communities around the world, while carrying out our mission of being Here for Good.
