Dr. Birgit Strotmann and Stamatis Elntib Honored with 2014 David A. Wilson Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

At the 2014 Laureate Leadership Summit held in Washington, D.C., Stamatis Elntib of the University of Liverpool Online Interactive Education Division and Dr. Birgit Strotmann from Universidad Europea de Madrid were honored with the 2014 David A. Wilson Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Both Dr. Strotmann and Mr. Elntib will each receive a $50,000 research award to conduct the research described in their winning proposals. 

  • Dr. Strotmann’s proposal is titled “Tertiary CLIL” and will investigate the implications of internationalization on higher education and the impact on all stakeholders, from students and faculty to society as a whole. Dr. Strotmann and her team of co-researchers, which includes Victoria Maria Bamond, José María López Lago, María Bailén Andrino, Sonia Bonilla and Francisco Montesinos, will research issues concerning how to guarantee quality instruction through faculty development, classroom interaction and learning strategies, improved student outcomes and satisfaction, and language competency of students and faculty. 
  • Mr. Elntib’s proposal is titled “Modeling the interpersonal dynamics of student retention” and will focus on the impact of the interpersonal relationships between professors and students on student retention and graduation rates. He is joined by co-researcher Alina Perez. 

The David A. Wilson Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was created in 2007 by Laureate’s founder, Chairman and CEO, Douglas L. Becker, to honor Dr. David A. Wilson, a former member of Laureate Education, Inc.’s board of directors, to encourage faculty-led research on the topics of teaching and learning.

The 19 participating institutions in the Laureate network conducted a local selection process to review and choose their top proposal for submission to the Global Selection Committee, which includes Dr. David Wilson, Dr. Manuel Krauskopf (Chair), Dr. Germán Ramírez, Dr. Denise DeZolt, Dr. Águeda Benito and Dr. Bernardo González Arechiga.
