A team of students in the Center of Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology (CBIB) program at UNAB have developed a software that can transform digital files into biologic information that can be transported by the cells. By using these cells as digital storage, the UNAB team hopes to create an unhackable device that can store large amounts of information. To give an idea of the size, the cells contained in a single human body could store all of the videos hosted by YouTube.
“We change the format of the digital information in binary code to biological information based on the four base nucleotides of DNA. Using biotechnological tools, the information is then synthesized and stored in a DNA sequence that can be introduced in a cell,” said Felipe Gomez (23), Bioinformatics Engineering student.
“Bioinformatics Engineering seeks to unify biotechnology and information technology. Our graduates are able to implement and develop tools to provide solutions to problems in the fields of computer science, health, genomics, and the computer modeling of biological systems,” said Dr. Danilo Gonzalez, Dean of the UNAB School of Bioinformatics Engineering.
