2013 Here For Good Award Winner - Patsy Pamela Ordóñez Arellano

At the 2013 Laureate Leadership Summit, Universidad del Valle de México (UVM) graduate, Patsy Pamela Ordóñez Arellano was announced as the 2013 Here for Good winner for her tireless effort to spread awareness about the human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer as well as provide screening and treatment to women in Mexico City, Mexico. Patsy attended the event in Orlando, Florida and received recognition for her work as founder of the National Foundation for Cervical Cancer.

In 2010, at the age of 22, Patsy created her foundation, recognizing the vast need to provide information to women about the prevention and treatment of HPV, the leading cause of cervical cancer. The foundation operates a clinic in Mexico City and volunteer doctors and nurses treat women for both HPV and cervical cancer. In its first year, the National Foundation for Cervical Cancer served 700 women. In 2012, the clinic was able to treat almost 3,800 women.

Patsy delivered an emotional speech to the crowd of over 300 assembled at the 2013 Laureate Leadership Summit and said that her dream is to not only operate a clinic, but to provide a hospital that would help more women in Mexico fight the disease.  As founder, Patsy advocates for information about prevention of HPV and works with local government and community leaders to elevate and encourage conversation. The disease is widespread in Mexico and unfortunately, many women do not have the financial means or the access to speak to a doctor and get treated for the virus until it is too late.
