Laureate is Here For Good

We believe society is best served when our students, faculty, and our entire organization use our collective skills and experience to create positive and lasting change. Our students and graduates are improving lives and making our world better. Our institutions are providing the critical skills, knowledge and support to help make this happen. To us, this is about permanence and purpose. This is what we mean by Here for Good.

While there are countless examples of incredible service and innovation across our vast network, every year we recognize specific examples through the Here for Good Awards. These awards are given to members of the Laureate network who are creating exceptional positive social impact in their community. In 2017, there is one winner and nine honorees in two categories, respectively: faculty/staff and student/graduate.

Faculty/staff category: Fatima Casa Nova and Alessandra Bahia from Centro Universitário Dos Guararapes (UniFG) in Recife, Brazil, the center of the 2015 Zika virus outbreak in Brazil. Casa Nova, a psychology professor at UniFG, and Bahia, a law professor, organized a Congress of Microcephaly at the university to bring together medical professionals, government officials, and other community actors to launch an initial response to the Zika outbreak and rise in microcephaly cases. The two professors then started a special program at the FG Community Clinic to provide holistic care to families with children born with microcephaly. The clinic has served more than 50 families affected by Zika, involving over 600 students.

Student/graduate category: Carolina Zuheill Rosales, a master’s student at the Universidad del Valle de México (UVM) and a medical doctor by training provides healthcare to the most isolated populations in Mexico through mobile medical clinics run by her non-profit, GUIMEDIC. She mobilizes over 1,200 volunteers a year to run clinics in five Mexican states, serving more than 55,000 people in 2016 alone. Zuheill has also been recognized as a local YouthActionNet fellow and Laureate Global Fellow for her social entrepreneurial venture.
