UPN Researcher Recognized as Peru’s Top Female Inventor

Karen Cuba Vargas, a graduate and faculty member at UPN, has been honored by Indecopi, Peru’s Patent Authority Office, for her significant contributions to research and innovation, earning her the title of the most prolific female inventor in Peru.

Her success includes recognition at the most recent Korea International Women’s Invention Exposition 2023, where her inventions won 17 gold medals, 19 silver, and six bronze. Karen’s work and dedication to mentorship showcases her role as a champion of sustainable and inclusive technological advancement, while also contributing to advancing progress to achieve the UN SDGs.

“My mission as a researcher and inventor is to drive the development of new technologies aimed at increasing efficiency and simplifying daily activities,” Karen said.

An example of increasing efficiency is her ‘Concrete Separator Generator Device’ patent, designed to optimize the manufacturing process of concrete separators, crucial in housing construction. In comparison to this, Karen also contributes to people’s well-being by inventing products that improve quality of life and accessibility, such as a shampoo dispenser designed for people with disabilities.

Karen’s influence extends beyond her patents. By encouraging curiosity and innovation among her students and peers, she helps to address gender barriers and promote women in STEM fields. “As aPeruvian female inventor, I am dedicated to inspiring my colleagues and students, especially women, to understand that there are no gender barriers in the field of invention and the materialization of innovative ideas.”

Her message when encouraging young women to enter the field of inventions is clear: “You must believe in yourself, trust in your abilities and passions, and never doubt your capacity to succeed.Gender diversity in STEM is essential for innovation and progress. Always remember that your voice, your perspective, and your talent are valuable and necessary.”

“I am dedicated to inspiring my colleagues and students, especially women, to understand that there are no gender barriers in the field of invention and the materialization of innovative ideas.”
